Susan* sent me this entry from Margaret Cho’s blog. Y’all, I’m warning you now, it’s profanity laden awesome sauce. But I’m sorry, I love it. I do. The title of it is, “I’m a Christian, You Fuckers.”
*A word, if I may, about Susan. She does not agree with this entry. I mean, we haven’t discussed it but I know that she has to take some issue with at least parts of this entry. However, I appreciate that despite that fact, she A) knows me well enough to know I would love it and B) is willing to send it to me with no judgment attached, with just the comment, “somehow, I thought you would like this…”

[...] No matter, and I only bring this up because of this very cool post from Margaret Cho, shared by The Recovering Baptist. There is a great deal of truth in the post, but if you are squeamish about language, don’t [...]
Love it? Why? Normally I think most of the stuff on your blog is, at least funny and smart, even though I disagree with most of the political and spiritual underpinning. This is Obnoxious and juvinile. Her rant, although colorful, sounds strangely familiar to a Jr. High student who has just enough facts to be loud but irrelevant. The fact that she uses profanity to make her point only adds to my ability to dismiss her out of hand. She is offensive to me on many levels, not because of her view, but because of her utter contempt for people who disagree with her. I know that there are right wing zealots who are just as odious but Cho’s presentation does nothing to bring anyone together. She has driven the wedge deeper. By the way, the baby with the great idea is very funny.
You know, I though certain aspects of it were funny, and others were cringe-inducing, but I appreciated one primary aspect of it, and it was apparently a hidden point… “Don’t judge me.” I just don’t think that as Christians our focus is meant to be going on blogs and demonizing those who don’t share our beliefs. Nor should it be fighting against gay marriage and reproductive rights; we’re called to Love God, then Love Our Neighbors, “and on this hang all the law and the prophets.” People attacking Margaret Cho for what she says on her own blog are doing neither. God doesn’t need defending, and they are hardly being loving to a neighbor.
If we were loving our neighbors as we should, if we were really living as Christ directs us, we’d be working on much more important things that actually improved people’s lives, not just seeking to restrict them.
