Bollywood! The musical! Actually, they’re all musicals…
What is Bollywood? I guess that depends on who you ask. To me, it is an endless source of entertainment. Some of the best laughs I’ve had in the last ten years have come from Bollywood movies. To Indians (the kind that come from India, not the Native American kind), it is their film industry. And looking strictly at the numbers, it kicks Hollywood’s ass. They produce about 800 movies a year that are seen by, literally, a billion people. The majority of India’s population is poor and living in small villages and towns. Most of these places don’t have movie theatres, so when the movies roll into town, they are shown on the side of a van or a sheet that someone hangs. These people want to be A)inspired by patriotic fare or B)entertained, and let me assure you there is a very willing suspension of disbelief.
In Bollywood movies (which are almost all musicals), the couples never kiss and are never shown gettin’ busy. Actresses are afraid they’ll be thought of as slutty if they do, and BW fans take the personal lives of their actors very seriously. Mamta Kulkarni was a beautiful, promising young actress and then she posed topless, ending her career permanently. These fans are not messing around. Lately, though, i have been surprised to see some full on mouth kissing. I admit it. I was shocked. But these movies, while catching up to Hollywood technically, still have enough cheese in them to make you hoot. Here are many that I’ve seen:
