Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998)
Starring:
Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Raveena Tandon, Ramya Krishna
Man I hate to start a weekend like this. This movie was bad. And not in the typical BW hilarious kind of way. It was just….bad. Hard to watch. The first part of the movie was okay, AB and Govinda have some good chemistry and comedic timing. Some funny stuff. But then, the writers had to introduce twins into the mix. It’s just like Comedy of Errors! Only….ah…..not. At all.
The plot goes like this: AB and Govinda are two cops who have a love/hate relationship. Govinda is in love with AB’s sister but he’s also a bit of a playa’. There is the standard gang of baddies who kill a cop so they’re on the shitlist and then they kill a witness to the murder and the victim’s roommate goes to the police. It’s convoluted, but by intermission, AB has become engaged to the eye witness and Govinda is engaged to AB’s sister and all is well. Then these two thieves who are also played by AB and Govinda show up in town and do all kinds of shenanigans and mistaken identity crises occur and hilarity does NOT ensue. Once again, the movie could have ended a good 45 minutes before it did.
And now, an open letter to Bollywood directors.
Dear Directors,
The key to a good story, as well as good comedy, is timing. Know that a premise does not have to be drawn out over an hour and three endings. Once you’ve established the conflict, MOVE ON. It’s called resolution people. Read up on it.
Love,
Everyone. Every. One.
