Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999)
Starring:
Kajol, Anil Kapoor, Johnny Lever, Anupam Kher
Vijay (Anil Kapoor) is a spoiled, full grown jackass who wants to enjoy life. His father (Anupam Kher) wants him to settle down and get married. They live with some extended family in a Miami Vice looking mansion.
Vijay agrees to marry but on one condition (because as an unemployed brat he’s in a position to make demands): he will marry a girl for one year and he if likes her then he will consider keeping her. Vijay’s father decides to ask his secetary, Megha (Kajol) to be The One. She agrees to the marriage, even though she doesn’t feel good about it, because she comes from a highly dysfunctional family and marrying this guy will provide lots of money with this she can help them.
One problem: she doesn’t know about the “special condition.” When she finds out, she refuses to marry Vijay and she quits her job. One day as she is coming home she finds out that her unmarried sister is pregnant so to save her family’s honour she swallows every shred of dignity she ever had and marries Vijay.
Once they are married Megha becomes the perfect wife and they seem to fall in love on their honeymoon. After the honeymoon he goes back to his old ways, treating her badly. Then one day Vijay is visited by the Karma fairy when he is hit by a truck. Megha (who is in love with him) does all she can to make him better (including a very disturbing scene in which she climbs a huge marble staircase on bloody knees) and she devotes her life to him. He gets better and goes home, able to walk again.
A year is up and it’s time for Vijay to decide. Not surprisingly, he still wants to get rid of Megha. So she goes back to her now all-fixed-up family, BUT WAIT. She’s pregnant! Vijay finds out and then decides he loves her again and starts to woo her. She is stubborn. She invites everyone they know to a baby blessing ceremony and she tells everyone the whole story and what a prick he is. He gets up in her grill about being stubborn.
He decides to play a trick to get her back. Some weird secondary characters concoct a story and tell her that some criminals have escaped from prison and they’ve gone to Vijay’s house to kill him. She starts running, HUGELY pregnant, to his house. Why not a cab? Who knows? On the way there, she finds out that it’s all a trick, but she goes there anyone to confront him about it. BUT WAIT! Some prisoners actually HAVE escaped from prison and stab him like, 50 times with what looks like a machete. She comes in and finds him, figures out it’s real, slips and falls on her pregnant stomach and can’t get up. So he picks her up, BLEEDING PROFUSELY, carries her down a flight of stairs, bleeding profusely, drives her to the ER, doesn’t bother with a stretcher, just picks her up and carries her into the hospital, after being stabbed 50 TIMES, and they end up together with their baby.
Seriously, this one goes on the list of top ten most dramatic scenes in Bollywood history. Top ten, people.
