Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
Starring:
Saif Ali Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni
This movie entwines the lives of three friends Akash Malhotra (Aamir Khan), Sameer (Saif Ali Khan), and Siddharth Sinha (Akshaye Khanna). Three very sexy men. Although they have similar lives and have grown up together, they have very different personalities.
Akash does not believe in love, but making an ass of himself lands him a black eye in a disco when he makes a pass at Shalini (Priety Zinta), who is engaged to someone else.
Sameer is a romantic, who falls in love with every woman he meets, usually to have his heart broken and his valuables stolen (in Goa). Sameer’s parents want him to marry Pooja (Sonali Kulkarni), but Sameer refuses. Then he meets her and finds out she’s in love with someone else, and so of course he falls in love with her and spends the rest of the movie trying to win her.
Siddharth is an artist who lives with his single mother, and gets attracted to a much older woman, Tara Jaiswal (Dimple Kapadia, who looks like Madonna), who is also a divorcee, a mother, and an alcoholic. Tara and Sid share the same artistic sensibilities. Akash and Sid have a falling out when Akash suggests that Sid is only into Tara for the sex.
Sid goes away for the summer to an art camp, Akash is sent to Australia to work for his father. During this summer, Akash falls in love with Shalini (whom he meets again on the plane). At the end of the summer, all three are back in India and Tara has been rushed to the hospital, dying, probably of cirrhosis of the liver. Sameer comes to the hospital to be with Sid and in the end, Akash shows up too. They all make amends and are friends again.
This move was great, even the music numbers were better than ususal. Between that and the trendy hairstyles, this movie signalled a new wave of movie style in Bollyood. Hopefully they’ll make more like this one. If they cut the music numbers, this could probably do well in America.
